Photo: Refusing to "go modern", Monemvasia, one of the Greek Islands, offers visitors a wonderful alternative to the hustle, bustle, and touristy feeling of so much of Europe. The island itself is one large rock; there is only one town, with only one way in and one main street.
Dating back centuries, probably founded by Spartans fleeing mainland barbarians, Monemvasia was under constant attack, but not conquered until the Crusaders laid siege to the place in the 13th Century. After three years, with food gone, the Greeks surrendered the city.
